Needs USB 3 cable
Verbatim has a huge reputation in portable storage. It still makes 3.5in floppy disks as well as CDs, DVDs, USB sticks and portable hard drives. The new Store’n’Go range ships with USB 3 support – something we hope Apple supports in the near future as well as Thunderbolt. They also come in a variety of colours.
Set up was a straightforward plug-and-play affair. It’s worth noting that USB 3 drives can work with USB 2 ports using the right cable. USB 3 boasts throughput of up to 5Gbps – more than 10 times the 480Mbps offered by USB 2.
As the Store’n’Go was limited to USB 2 we found that it ran at about one-fifth the speed of Thunderbolt.
Macworld Australia’s buying advice
The Verbatim Store’n’Go is a great hard drive that is constrained by Apple’s lack of USB 3 support. However, it’s still good value and worth considering.
