Russell Athletic Headphone Hoodie

Russell Athletic,

Fantastic idea; machine washable; well made

Audio quality is lacking

Exercise is a popular pastime in Australia. Every weekend large numbers of people are heading out the front door with sneakers adorning their feet, to run, walk, ride or lift weights at the local gym. And music plays a large part in staying motivated and occupied as they burn yesterdays’ dinner.

Russell Athletics’ Headphone Hoodie is a stylish addition to your daily exercise routine. The machine-washable sweatshirt offers earphones built in to the drawstrings of its hood – a strange but unique concept. Does it look strange to have drawstrings hanging from your ears? Maybe a little.

The earpieces are made from a hard plastic that leaves you questioning their build quality but leaves them extremely light and surprisingly comfortable.

The Hoodie’s earphone system, integrated via a collaboration with HB3 Technology, offers an adequate sound but there is an apparent lack of substance to the sound that may leave some disappointed. If you own high-quality headphones you will probably end up picking them up on the way out.

At the front of the hoodie sit two pockets; the right-hand one has a built-in zip that protects the 3.5mm input cable from the roughness of a washing machine. It has enough room for smartphones and iPods. When washing, simply zip up the front pocket containing the input jack and you are away.

The sweatshirt is offered in a range of different colours.

Macworld Australia’s buying advice.

The concept of the Headphone Hoodie is fantastic – no longer do you have to worry about grabbing your headphones as you head off to the gym – but sadly it didn’t quite live up to the concept. The Hoodie is well made, comfortable and fashionable but the sound lacks range and strength.
