Some of us need to take our computers into hostile environments, for which the Transcend Rugged USB Flash Drive (JetFlash V70) is made. It is covered with a rubberised casing that is water resistant and shockproof – it’s certified MIL-STD 810F.

There’s a cap protecting the USB connector, and a small rubber insert keeps the cap gunk-free while the drive is in use. Performance was reasonable, with the drive capable of about 50Mbps over USB 2. However, Transcend isn’t out to sell you a Ferrari among memory sticks – its focus is on a building a tank.

Macworld Australia’s buying advice.

If you’re looking for a rugged drive then this will fit the bill.
