My name is Anthony and I’m addicted to exercise tech. There. I’ve said it. If it beeps, blinks or connects to something I use when I’m running or riding, then I’ll gleefully test it out. The Bodyguardz Trainr Pro (apparently indiscriminate use of the letter ‘z’ and omitting the occasional vowel makes you cool) is a case and armband combo for keeping your iPhone close by when you’re exercising. I’ve been testing it for a couple of weeks.

Bodyguardz says its Trainr Pro case is made from the same materials used in the helmets of American football players for protecting their skulls. Now, I’m very careful with my iPhone 7 Plus (there are versions of the case for the iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Plus and 7) but on the first day of testing the case, it slipped from my hands as I was getting into the car, onto concrete from about 1.5 metres.

The iPhone escaped unscathed.

The case is made of a material called Unequal, which is a blend of both Kevlar and Accelleron. It’s a tight fit around the iPhone and isn’t slippery, making the iPhone easy to grip while in use. All ports, buttons and switches are easy to access and it doesn’t add a lot of bulk to the iPhone’s body. There are two narrow slits on the sides for attaching to the armband.

Once the case is secured to the armband it is really hard to remove. As in, I couldn’t extricate the case from the armband without taking the armband off and extracting my phone from the case. The upside is, of course, that your phone is not in any danger of ever falling out while you’re exercising. But it also means it’s a colossal pain if you want to take a quick photo or selfie.

As a trail runner, I love stopping to shoot a pic of the local wildlife or scenery. Not being able to quickly grab my phone is an annoyance.

That aside, the Bodyguardz Trainr Pro is a great case and the armband, while a little too secure, is comfortable to wear.
