My Passport Studio

Western Digital, www.wdc.com

Pros

Solid; fast; well made

Cons

Heavy

Up to $240 (1TB)

Reviews

While it’s not the most svelte external drive we’ve seen, the Western Digital My Passport Studio is solid and will stand up to being carried around. It has USB 2 and FW800 connectors and comes pre-formatted for use in a Mac.

The My Passport Studio was ready to use in a few seconds. There’s no setup to go through, although there are some diagnostic utilities and tools for erasing the drive’s contents.

Performance was very good with file transfers using FW800 running at about 453Mbps. Although that’s not as fast as Thunderbolt, it’s still quick enough to move about 3.5GB of data in a minute.

Macworld Australia’s buying advice.

This is a robust device that performs well and is designed for Mac users. It comes in 500GB and 1TB capacities.
