Strong sound and bass response

Weighs over 1Kg; tight dock connector

It’s bigger, heavier and more expensive than any of its rivals, but Logitech’s S715i is an impressive travel speaker.

You won’t be slipping this one into your pocket, as the chunky black speaker weighs just over a kilo and measures 360mm long and 60mm thick, making it far and away the heftiest speaker in this group. Even so, it should still fit into a backpack or travel bag, and its eight-hour rechargeable battery means that you can listen to your music anywhere you want.

The S717i also produces a heavyweight sound – it’s clear and detailed, and I was only able to turn it up to about 80 percent of its maximum volume before I had to stop for fear of annoying my neighbours. Logitech doesn’t quote the output wattage, but it genuinely rivals some of the non-portable home speaker systems we’ve seen at a similar price.

Of course, the real test for a portable speaker is the bass output, and the S715i doesn’t disappoint on that score. The chunky design turns out to be an advantage here, lending a nice weighty kick to the bass on Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, and the S715i will certainly be able to pump out some dance tunes at a BBQ or by a swimming pool.

Our only complaint was that we had to remove the (not particularly thick) protective case on our iPhone in order to fit it into the dock properly. Logitech also makes a model called the Wireless Boombox – slightly cheaper too at $199 – that ditches the dock and gives you Bluetooth wireless instead.

Macworld Australia’s buying advice

It may be bigger and heavier than most portable speakers, but the S715i is still perfectly practical as a portable travel speaker, and the chunky design allows it to generate enough power and bass to really get things swinging.
