iSkin solo for iPhone 4/4S

Microban antimicrobial protection to protect against germs

Standard type of case

US$30 + shipping

The use of Microban antimicrobial protection sets iSkin’s solo for iPhone 4/4S (US$30) apart from the crowd. Otherwise, it’s a pretty standard translucent silicone-like case.

The iSkin Solo is a soft but firm theromoplastic case that fits all models of the iPhone 4 and 4S. The glossy skin-style case comes in a rainbow of bright, translucent colours that show off the Apple logo: Pink, black, blue, or purple. The back is fairly plain, except for a pair of barely-there wavy lines near the sides and the iSkin logo. For an extra US$5, you can upgrade to the Solo FX SE, which looks something like a funky, modern animal print. It’s offered in the same palette of colours, which are probably not universally appealing.

iSkin boasts that the solo is constructed with a chemical-free theromoplastic, and the company claims the case’s antimicrobial protection keeps germs off your precious iPhone. The material is firm, so it shouldn’t stretch or lose its shape, and it’s not at all sticky like some silicone cases are.

The case comes up over the edges of the screen, so you have some measure of protection if you drop your iPhone face-down. However, no screen protector or film is included, so if you want more protection, that would be a recommended add-on. The iSkin solo does add a little bit of bulk, but not excessively so for a skin case.

The iPhone’s Sleep/Wake button and the volume buttons are covered with their own protective moulds, but are still easily usable within the case. While all of the other ports are accessible without removing the case, your solo-fitted phone may be too large to fit into a dock-cradle accessory. Luckily, the solo is quite easy to slip on and off.

If you’re looking for high fashion, this may not be your best bet. But if you want colourful protection from both germs and minor drops, the iSkin solo is a case to consider.
