Light, waterproofing

Adds some bulk, price

Despite all the technical wizardry that goes into your iPhone, it’s not designed to be taken into dusty or wet environments. And we all know someone who has broken his or her iPhone’s display. The Lifeproof Nuud for iPhone 6 offers protection from water, dust, snow and falls for the iPhone.

The Nuud is a two-piece case that snaps around the iPhone’s body. In order to test the case’s waterproof capability, the Nuud ships with a plastic insert that you can place in the case for your own immersion test. Lifeproof rates the water protection at two metres of submersion for up to an hour.

Rubber seals and clear covers protect all of the iPhone’s ports and other potential entry points for contaminants. The iPhone’s buttons and switches all still work as the Nuud provides its own switches over the iPhone’s built in controls. Although the iPhone’s front button is also covered, it could still be used with TouchID.

The only part of the iPhone that isn’t covered by the Nuud is the screen. However, the area surrounding the display is sealed, so water or other contaminants can’t seep in. Lifeproof includes a screen protector that can be stuck to the display to protect it from scratches, but its application is optional.

Although the Nuud delivers plenty of protection, it doesn’t add too much bulk. At around 40g, it adds about 4mm to the thickness of the iPhone 6 and about 12mm to the length and width.

In our testing, we had a couple of issues. The area around the Lightning port is well secured, but our aftermarket charge and sync cable didn’t fit into the slot. An original Apple cable was fine, but given the number of aftermarket cables on the market, another 0.5mm of clearance would be useful.

Also, the Nuud is quite difficult to remove. This is a bit of a double-edged sword. While it’s important that the case stays firmly positioned around the iPhone to protect it and to ensure all of the seals remain intact, the extra size and weight the Nuud adds to the iPhone may not be ideal in all situations.

As well as the case, Lifeproof will be releasing other accessories for the Nuud case such as handlebar mounts for bikes, car mounts and armbands.

We’d expect tradespeople to like the Lifeproof Nuud, as it offers great protection without compromising the iPhone’s usability. The $129.95 price tag may leave you a little cold, but parting with those dollars will be less painful than losing your phone and its data in event of an accident.

What does this mean!! Is it 1 hour or 2 hours – and at what depth of submersion?

  2. Macworld Australia Staff says:

Oops – that should be two meters from up to an hour. Correction made. Thanks for letting us know
