Focal Spirit One

Audio Marketing,

Luxurious; audiophile sound; good price for what you get

Smallish earcups; tight fit

First off, let us just say that these headphones ooze quality straight out of the box. The design is stunning and the build quality is excellent – far above what you’d expect for a pair of $299 headphones.

These cans are closed, circumaural – or around-the- ear – models made from lightweight aluminium and plastic and cleverly articulated to fit any head. We found the soft earcups and headband cushion were very comfortable, but as the ‘phones aim for passive noise isolation they do grip the ears quite tightly. Also, I found the earcups to be a little small – I had to wiggle my ears into them.

For iPhone, iPod and iPad users, there’s a detachable, cloth-wrapped, 1.2m anti-tangle cable of equally high quality featuring an in-line remote control and microphone for controlling your music and making and taking phone calls. There are also a two-prong airline adaptor and 3.5-to-6.35mm hi-fi jack adaptor in the box, plus a hard case and a soft bag.

Of course, none of this matters if the audio falls short … but there are few worries on this count. As you’d hope for from an company with a proven audiophile track record like France’s Focal, the Spirit Ones provide very good sound for the price. Their most obvious quality is a huge amount of detail and clarity, with a relatively compact soundstage but good instrument definition.

While they’re quite neutral in their presentation, the Spirit Ones still pack in plenty of bass, but natural- sounding and tuneful bass, not the doof-doof kind. In fact, we enjoyed a coherence across the range with just a hint of brightness in the treble.

The audio is delivered via mylar/titanium-domed 1.5in drivers with a 6Hz-22kHz frequency response.

Macworld Australia‘s buying advice.

Available in black or white, the award-winning, high-fidelity Focal Spirit One headphones are a real treat for your iOS devices. We would recommend trying them on before buying if you have adult male ears, however.
