Epson PictureMate PM235
Cost-effective; good print quality
No option for rechargeable battery
The Epson PictureMate is a high-resolution, four-colour inkjet printer that can print photos in under 40 seconds.
It’s multi-format memory card compatible, which lets it operate without the need for a computer. Unfortunately, there’s no way to get prints directly off your iOS device, and there’s no Wi-Fi so you’ll need to rely on a USB connection to print from your Mac.
There’s also an optional Bluetooth adaptor that will let you print wirelessly, but iOS users need not apply.
The PM235 comes with a handy 2.5in LCD viewer that lets you see your photos before printing. There’s also some basic editing functionality, but ‘basic’ is the key word.
Another unique feature trumps the competition: a handle. Jokes aside, for a portable printer a handle is a pretty useful tool.
On the negative side, the lack of a battery in the PM235 means that there had better be a powerpoint wherever you decide to stop and print. Additionally, at 2.2kg the PictureMate is about the same weight as the HP Officejet 100, a printer that is capable of printing high-quality photos and A4 documents.
A refill cartridge with 150 sheets plus ink cartridge costs about $50, so printing is much cheaper than other printers in this review.
Macworld Australia’s buying advice.
The PictureMate is a nice photo printer which works with your Mac or standalone using memory cards. Print quality is good. The addition of a handle seems to signify that the printer is portable, but the lack of battery indicates it’s not. Maybe you can decide?
The PictureMate is also the same weight as the HP Officejet 100, a unit that is capable of printing photos and regular A4 business documents but the HP is over double the price.
