Last week, I mentioned that the two main Macs I use, a Mac mini and a MacBook Air are both getting quite long in the tooth in technology terms. The Mac mini has passed three years of faithful service and the MacBook Ai, a recent second-hand purchase – is closer to six years and has been superseded by the MacBook.

But, here I am at 30,000 feet on my way to Sydney, tapping away and getting real work done on the MacBook Air.

Last week, Melbourne readers may have heard me on the radio chatting with ABC presenter Refael Epstein about some recent research that has found people are hanging onto their smartphones for longer, now waiting three years rather than two for updates. And while I usually replace my iPhone each year, my “old” unit gets passed on to another family member and stays in use for three or four years.

After last week’s newsletter, I received a note from a reader suggesting it would be interesting to find out what the oldest Mac being currently used by Macworld Australia readers might be.

So, drop me a note and let me know how old your Mac is. I expect that there will be a few people holding old models in cupboards or garages (I’ve got a MessagePad and eMate that I’ve kept for posterity). And, while you’re at it – I wonder what the oldest iPhone and iPad still in regular use are.

By the way, in the next few weeks I’ll be speaking at a couple of user group meetings in Melbourne. My good friend Les and I will be chatting about home automation at iMug this Tuesday 27 February 2018 (see: www.imug.com.au), and I’ll be presenting at AUSOM (see: https://ausom.net.au) on Saturday 3 March 2018, chatting about security. Feel free to stop in to one or both of those and say hi.

And remember, if you’d like me to come by and visit your user group, let me know. Although I’m based in Melbourne, I do travel a bit so I’ll try to make interstate visits work if I can.
