Westfield Southland has confirmed that a new Apple Store will soon open in the shopping centre complex in Cheltenham, with an area currently closed off as construction and fit-out begins.

Melbourne photographer and Twitter user @Pironik17 tipped Macworld that a new store was set to open:

“Westfield Southland in Melbourne just told me that Apple are moving in. Construction has all ready began,” they commented in a tweet.

A Westfield employee subsequently verified the news today, stating that while construction was underway, management remains unsure as to when the new store is scheduled to open.

Rumours of a new opening have been circulating for months, with Macworld previously reporting that Apple was advertising for ‘specialist’ positions in an undisclosed location in or around Melbourne.

The opening will almost certainly occur before Apple opens its Melbourne flagship store in a location in or around Crown Casino.

The move follows strong growth in the company’s retail division and record popularity of its iOS and Mac products in the Asia-Pacific. This latest opening sees Apple join 410 other retailers in the centre, which sees approximately 16 million shoppers pass through its doors every year.
