A new app from Vodafone Hutchison Australia makes it simple to see who of your friends are on the same network as you – so that you can call them for free.

Like other telcos, Vodafone and 3 Mobile have long offered free or discounted calls between numbers on their own network. With the two now owned by VHA, customers of either brand now benefit from better rates to more people. (Many plans offer unlimited free calling among the two networks, but you should check your contract to be sure.)

However, the free calling has always posed a small problem – how do you know what network your mates are on, without calling them up first to check? That’s where Who2Call steps in. The app – which can be downloaded by anyone, but only works for iPhone or Android users with a Vodafone or 3 Mobile number – emulates your phone’s standard contact list, but adds a Vodafone or 3 logo beside the numbers it recognises from the VHA networks. So you just need to open Who2Call (just as you would your Contacts app), choose a friend, and call directly from within the app.

“Who2Call is a simple innovation that makes it really easy to see exactly which of your contacts are on the Vodafone and 3 networks,” said VHA general manager of innovation and new business Doug Maloney. “It puts the power of free on-net calls to almost 6 million people in the hands of our customers, and is a great example of how the merger between Vodafone and 3 is bringing real benefits to Australian consumers.”

The iPhone version requires iOS 4.0 and is available on the App Store.
