US storms cause outages to Instagram, Pinterest and Netflix

Recent storms in the US have caused blackouts across the country, leading to server outages on sites including Instagram, Pinterest and Netflix, with each service using Twitter and Facebook to update its users on the situation which lasted for hours.

Photo-sharing and social network site Instagram used its Facebook fan page to post a message, reports The Australian, informing users that the outage had been caused by the electrical storms and that its engineers were currently working to fix the server issues.

During the outage ‘Instagram’ was the most popular search term on Saturday in the US, according to Google Trends.

Netflix, Pinterest and Instagram are all customers of of Amazon’s web services and data storage division all affected by the recent storms.  division. The unit provides web services and data storage facilities that are commonly used for “cloud computing”.
