Twitter to ditch its Mac app?

New reports have suggested that Apple Twitter is planning to stop development of its Twitter for Mac app.

The app, which hasn’t been updated since June 2011 and therefore does not support the Retina MacBook Pro or Mountain Lion’s notifications, is popular among many Mac users as their primary Twitter client. Those users may be forced to switch to alternative third-party apps such as Tweetdeck if Twitter decides to stop working on its Mac app.

There has been no official announcement from Twitter about the end of Twitter for Mac, but TechCrunch claims to have spoken to “multiple sources” that have confirmed that Twitter has been discussing the end of development for the app.

Former TechCrunch writer MG Siegler tweeted: “Word is that Twitter made the call today: Twitter for Mac is done. They won’t kill it outright, but no further updates. Goodbye, old friend.”

The problem with the twitter integration in Mountain Lion is that if you have multiple twitter accounts (as I do), the notifications open in Safari, regardless of which account it is for. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but it is not possible to be logged into more than one twitter account via a web browser at any particular time.

Thus, an update for the twitter for mac app (or the notification system in the OS) so the app could load the specific tweet would be a very nice, not to mention handy, touch.

Thankfully in iOS it is much easier (in many respects) to have multiple twitter accounts in action.

Pity they are (apparently) not continuing with development. As for switching to TweetDeck (or one of the other clients)… would prefer to use multiple browsers (or an iPhone).
