Twitter is hoping to make it easier for people to discover new music on its #music iOS app with the addition of genre search tools, released on Thursday.
With the update, the first for the mobile app since its launch in April, users can now search for artists by genre within the Charts page of the app, which surfaces the most popular new music on the site. Alternative, country, dance, electronic, folk, hip-hop, metal, pop, R&B and rock comprise the 10 new searchable genres.
By clicking on ‘alternative’, for instance, users are sent to a page featuring the best new alternative bands trending on Twitter, which currently includes the Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend and The Strokes.
The update also includes several new charts for ‘superstars’, ‘unearthed’ and ‘hunted’ artists, which surface music from the biggest acts, hidden talent and music that is popular on blogs, respectively.
Such ‘hunted’ artists may be of particular importance to Twitter – prior to #music’s launch the blogging site acquired We Are Hunted, a startup that charted top new songs based on popularity on blogs and social media.
The new version of #music also fixes bugs that were causing some tracks to become unavailable.
Twitter could not be immediately reached to comment further on the app’s enhancements.
Twitter launched its #music mobile app and desktop site in April. Both use activity on Twitter to help people find and share music. Songs shared via the service are from Spotify, iTunes or Rdio; other music providers could be added later, the company said in its original announcement.
The service is currently available in Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, on iOS only. Bringing the service to more countries, and Android-powered devices, will happen over time, Twitter has said.
