Apples fifth-generation iPad will be thinner and lighter than the iPad 4 and will launch later this year, alongside an iPad mini 2 with Retina display and an iPod touch with a lower price tag, an analyst has predicted.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has correctly predicted Apple launches in the past, has said that he expects the next full-size iPad to be redesigned to look more like its smaller counterpart, with a “significantly lighter and slimmer” body, reports Apple Insider.
Kuo also expects that the iPad 5 will implement the software used to prevent unwanted responses when users accidentally touch the edges of the screen when using the device in one hand. This will allow the iPad to have narrower borders and therefore possibly a slightly bigger display.
Unlike some other recent rumours and analyst speculation, Kue forecasts a quarter three launch for the new iPad. Previous rumours have suggested that Apple will move to a biannual product upgrade cycle this year, which would mean a March launch for the next iPad.
Kuo correctly predicted that Apple would be launching a new full-size iPad with a minor spec boost and the new Lightning connector before the end of 2012, news that was an unwelcome surprise for some customers who had upgraded to the iPad 3 just six months before.
Kuo’s predictions also include a Retina iPad mini 2, which he thinks will launch at the same time as the next generation 10in iPad. He expects that the new iPad mini will share the same 2,048 x 1,536-pixel resolution as the full-size iPad, giving the device a big resolution boost from its current 1,024 x 768 resolution that it shares with the iPad 2. This would allow developers to create apps that at one resolution that works across both sizes of iPad.
As for iPods, Kuo believes that Apple could introduce a cheaper version of the fifth-generation iPod touch with no camera and less storage capacity for a price of US$199.
Kuo doesn’t think Apple will launch a television set just yet, but suggests that the Apple TV could be improved early this year, and eventually become a full-fledged HDTV in 2014. He notes that Apple lacks experience in the television industry, which could cause struggles when it comes to finding a reliable supply chain. However, Kuo expects that the widely speculated ‘iTV’ could become a source of growth for the company in the future.
This year, Kuo also expects Apple to launch an iPhone 6 with fingerprint sensor and a cheaper iPhone with six colours, as well as a new, all-Retina MacBook Pro lineup that will mean the end of the non-Retina MacBooks Pro.
