The new website, called The Dream Is Now, is part of Powell Jobs’ promotion of The Dream Act. There are millions of cases in the US where adults who were brought to the country illegally when they were young are finding themselves facing being deported, despite never knowing any other country besides America.
If passed, the Dream Act would let immigrants under 30 years of age earn legal residence and a path to citizenship in the US, through enlisting in the military or pursuing a degree, if they were brought to the country when they were younger than 15 and have lived there for more than five years.
So Powell Jobs’ new The Dream Is Now website allows the young immigrants, also known as ‘DREAMers’, to share their stories. The DREAMers can submit videos explaining their situations and why they want to stay in America, for visitors to the site to watch.
Powell Jobs worked with filmmaker Davis Guggenhiem to launch the new website, and Guggenhiem will eventually turn the videos posted onto the website into a documentary film.
“The documentary becomes a living, breathing petition,” the filmmaker told Yahoo News. “These DREAMers are putting everything on the line. When they come out like this, they are saying, ‘I’m ready to risk it all for what I believe.’”
Powell Jobs said that the new project aims to raise awareness of the issue, and give young people who would benefit from the Dream Act a chance to be heard.
“There needed to be a demystification – to put a face to these people, to hear the individual stories,” she said, revealing that she became interested in the Dream Act after she founded College Track, which aims to help low-income families and minority students in the US go to university. Many of the students that the College Track helps are undocumented immigrants.
“They’re our children’s friends,” Powell Jobs said. “They are people we know. This is a huge national problem that needs resolution.”
