It had been rumoured for a few days, but All Things Digital’s Kara Swisher has confirmed that Steve Jobs will be the opening night speaker at this year’s All Things Digital D8 conference from 1-3 June in California.

Founded by Swisher and colleague Walt Mossberg, the D conference is billed as “a gathering of the most influential figures in media and technology”. Each year, Swisher and Mossberg put the speakers to the test in unrehearsed onstage conversations. Australian Macworld readers might remember the entertaining interview with Steve Jobs and Bill Gates from 2007 (which can be watched here).

Along with Jobs, there are a number of high-profile media and technology speakers at this year’s conference, including Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, Avatar director James Cameron, and Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook. The full list can be seen here.

The event has sold out, but we will bring you news from the event in several weeks’ time. It should be an interesting session with Jobs, no doubt involving some questions regarding two of the year’s biggest technology news stories: the release of the iPad and the lost iPhone prototype.
