Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO of Apple, handing over the reins to Tim Cook and taking on a new role as chairman.

In a letter dated August 24, Jobs wrote:

“To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.”

Jobs, who co-founded Apple Computer with friend and engineer Steve Wozniak, has been suffering from serious health issues, including pancreatic cancer, in the past few years.

Steve has turned our beloved Apple from a company on the brink of liquidation into the most valuable company in the world. It’s sad to hear of his resignation, but his insight that “I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it” should be taken literally. He should know.

I started using an Apple computer with the launch of Apple IIc many years ago, and cannot now help thinking what a wonderful time Apple has given us with the mac and all the other products that have evolved out of the Apple line since. Even as a distant voice far from Cupertino, I wish to acknowledge the wonderful vision and magic Steve Jobs has given us. The best of wishes to his health.

We all appreciate all that Steve Jobs has brought us. He and the rest of Apple changed everything about computing and portable devices.

He is Phenomenal. With a capital P.
Do hope he recovers quickly and fully from his illness.
