Sony has announced it will release a new version of its PlayStation app – just hours after its PlayStation 4 media launch – that will be available for iOS and Android devices.

The app will offer users the capability to communicate with other players, use their smartphone or tablet as a second screen or controller and even download games to their PS4 while out of the house.

According to a Sony media release the app “will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens.”

“Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices.”

While the app’s release date is unknown, it is believed the PS4 will arrive late in 2013.

Xbox SmartGlass – from Sony’s rival console maker Microsoft, for its Xbox 360 gaming console – is already on the market with similar second screen capabilities, however how they compare is yet to be discovered.

The Xbox 360 is also due for an upgrade in 2013.
