Samsung has overshadowed the launch of Apple’s new iPhone 4S by flogging $2 smartphones in a pop-up shop several metres from Sydney’s official Apple Store.

A line up outside Samsung’s temporary store began forming at 8am today and has already outsized the queue at the Apple store close by, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Some of the people waiting for the $2 phone had been camped outside since Monday, hoping to get to the front of the line – making them eligible to receive the promotion. Samsung is offering the cheap-sale phone to the first 10 customers inside the store each day.

Samsung’s ambush is a stark contrast to the company’s announcement just days earlier, saying that it would delay the release of a new Google Android phone, as a mark of respect to the recent passing of Steve Jobs.

Apple’s iPhone 4S will launch officially in Australia tomorrow at 8am (AEDST).
