The  iPad 2  finally hit Aussie shores today, with online orders opening at 1am and queues forming as Apple retail stores and resellers prepare to open their doors at 5pm.

Around the country stores are expecting to attract large numbers of Apple fans. Earlier this morning we saw a  queue 30m long –and growing – at the Apple Store at Chadstone, Melbourne, and had reports of growing numbers in Newcastle and Sydney.

Insiders at one Apple store have told Australian Macworld that all customers who line up today “will be able to experience the new iPad”, which means that the stores could remain open later than usual to make sure everyone is served.

Below are some images of the 200+ queue forming in Sydney

The iPad 2 is faster and lighter than the original iPad and includes a whole host of new and improved features, including: Dual-core A5 chip, FaceTime, iPad Smart Cover, iOS 4, LED backlit display and Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity options.

Update: the iPad 2 is now available in Apple stores and reseller across the country.

Australian Macworld’s Editor Dave Bullard and Business Development Manager Tara Brady are at the Apple Store at Chadstone, amongst a 500-strong crowd of Apple fans, some waiting up to 27 hours to buy the iPad 2!

3 people were compelled to have their say. We encourage you to do the same..

  1. Robert says:

The whole iPad2 launch event has been unpleasant and lackluster, at least for me. True, I didn’t manage to secure one from a store, which I tried after the Apple store quoted a delivery of 2 to 3 weeks despite ordering at 6 am on release day. So maybe this is sour grapes?

My experience at several stores though was not one of excitement but of black market trading and under-the-counter deals. There was no first come first served but a plethora of special pre-orders (how did they happen), and random systems of allocation.

For me this took the shine off Apple products; it wasn’t a fun and exciting experience but tacky. Personally I’d rather avoid this when I buy technology products and I’ll now seriously look at alternatives that can provide a better overall experience – Samsung & Android, this is your time to shine!

  2. Tim Barnes says:

Two Words – Very dissapointed. I am on a reserved waiting list for a 64Gb, WiFi, Black, the seller didn’t recieve one in that spec. A call to several others netted the same result. I doubt he people in the pictures above would have all gotten their iPad, and they waited outside the Apple store, when will Adelaide get one Mr Job’s?

  3. Neil says:

After reading the media tales of woe regarding extended stock delays for the iPad2, I was somewhat surprised to learn that the 64GB 3G Black that I ordered on Friday evening is in store at Next Byte Macquarie Centre.

I’m off to collect my new toy, sorry, tool.
