Although the iPhone is the perfect travelling companion, the global roaming bills that follow it around most definitely are not.

Australian Business Traveller says it’s found an app that can reduce the amount of data used on emails, web-browsing and Twitter by up to 85 percent.

The new app, Onavo, allows users to re-route their internet needs through its own servers, which then compresses it and fires it off to your iPhone. And, apparently, it works: Australian Business Traveller found Onavo saved 85 percent of the data used to check email, 72 percent of the data used for web pages and 66 percent of the data used in the FaceBook app.

While the app wasn’t without flaws, the site calculated that if your email usage was 100MB on a trip, you’d be up for a $2,000 bill. With Onavo installed, that could reduce to $300. Impressive stuff. Check out ABT’s review of Onavo here.
