Sources in Apple’s supply chain say that new MacBook Pro models much thinner and lighter than their predecessors could launch as early as April.

Digitimes says that the new models are likely to pose a serious challenge to ultrabook vendors who have suffered a recent setback with Intel delaying the shipment of its new Ivy Bridge chips.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard about a complete redesign of the MacBook Pro range – earlier this month, a report suggested that the optical drives and traditional hard disk drives would be scrapped, with SSDs used instead.

Digitimes’ report mentions 13in and 15in versions, though earlier reports suggested there could be a 17in version too, though it would not launch until the second half of the year.

A separate report from Digitimes today claims that Apple is working on a 14in version of the MacBook Air.
