Apple is reportedly launching a gold colour option with the company’s new 9.7in iPads this month. Bloomberg says the move may be to combat “declining shipments” of iPads this year.
“Sales of the iPad have declined for the past two quarters after soaring from $5 billion when the product was introduced in 2010 to $30 billion in 2012,” Bloomberg’s Tim Culpan and Ter Burrows wrote. “Last year, iPad sales produced $32 billion.”
Apple CEO Tim Cook called the decline of iPad sales a “speed bump” in August.
The gold choice will be available for the rear and metal cover of iPads in addition to the existing space grey and silver, and will bring the company’s flagship tablet up to speed with iPhone colour options.
Apple first released a gold device with last year’s iPhone 5s and is offered in the iPhone 6 range.
KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted Apple would offer a gold option with its “iPad Air 2” in September.
