After all the cracks likening the new Mac Pro to a rubbish bin, it had to happen. Yes, someone has done just that. Made an apparently working Mac Pro themselves. Out of a trashcan.

The results were posted on by one Dschijn, who writes, “I am writting on behalf of a user from a German Forum… The mod/case is based on (yes) a trashcan: Authentics – Lunar…entics+-+Lunar.”

Dschijn then supplies a few specs for us:

Dimensions: 18cm width, 26cm height

Core i3 (Haswell)
Gigabyte z87n wifi
Radeon 7750

These are followed by a pictorial breakdown of the process, which you can follow here.

Whether the whole thing is genuine or not is unsure. Although the community seems to be pretty impressed. Commenter neilhart says simply, “Okay! That is a great hack. Good modding”, while kiwisincebirth comments, “Final result is impressive, I suspect there was significant time put into this one.”

Most notable is the cost. As we now know, even the most basic new Mac Pro will set you back $3999. The Mac Trash version? 60€, which Dschijn explains covers costs for the material (no PC hardware). Now, that really is impressive.
