Photographs have surfaced overnight alleging to show plastic mould ‘engineering samples’ of Apple’s rumoured next-generation iPhone and 7in iPad, believed to be released towards the end of 2012.

A “trusted source” in China gave the website GottaBeMobile images it said were of the much-speculated iPad Mini and a metal block sample of the next-generation iPhone showing “the size of the iPhone 5, where the antenna and ports will be and other design aspects”.

The images suggest the iPhone will be slightly over 12cm tall, the same width as the iPhone 4S and include a camera on the top-left of the smartphones’ back, next to a microphone and flash.

The iPad Mini images show the rumoured smaller 19-pin dock connector rather than the current 30-pin Apple dock connector at the bottom of the mockup with two speakers on either side. The third-generation iPad has just a single speaker.

Using Photoshop to hazard a guess at the size of the ‘engineering samples’, GottaBeMobile believes the new iPad will be a “little bit thinner than the current iPad, but it is only about two-thirds the size”.

“What we’ve found, using a pixel count, is that the iPad Mini should be around 213.36mm tall and about 143.67mm wide. This is approximately two-thirds of the size of the new third-generation iPad. The new iPad is 185.67mm wide, 241.3mm tall, and 9.39mm thick,” it said.

As a devotee of Apple products since the late 1980s, I am no longer willing to waste any more energy speculating about the latest Apple product. This could all be another ruse conceived & planned by the master PR people that is Apple just to continue building pre-sale excitement to keep themselves as the No 1 computer company that it is. Apple will reveal all when it’s ready to do.

I totally agree Brubie. The speculation certainly keeps the interest up though doesn’t it?
