Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch has landed a role in the new Star Trek thanks to a video he made on his iPhone in the kitchen.

Unable to attend an audition for the part and unable to find someone to film his audition professionally, Cumberbatch grabbed his iPhone and recorded his own audition in a friend’s kitchen.

Director J.J. Abrams described Cumberbatch’s iPhone-recorded performance as “one of the most compelling audition readings I’d ever seen,” according to a New York Times report.

Although not confirmed it seems likely that Cumberbatch will play genetically engineered tyrant Khan in the new film.

We wonder if he’ll be asking his iPhone to “Beam me up Siri?” when it comes to filming.
