Only a few weeks ago, the iPhone 5 was almost certain to feature ‘near field communication,’ technology allowing users to wave the device over a base to pay for goods and services. But now, according to a report by the Independent, Apple won’t be including NFC tech in the new iPhone.

The paper quoted a source ‘close to the discussions’ of the wave-and-pay integration, as businesses hadn’t settled on a single NFC protocol:

“The new iPhone will not have NFC, Apple told the operators it was concerned by the lack of a clear standard across the industry,” says the mysterious source.

However, the anonymous commentator did confirm that Apple is indeed working on NFC, which would link retail purchases to users’ iTunes accounts, meaning that Apple is literally making its own money now.
