Chinese website DigiTimes reports that “sources from the upstream supply chain” claim the rumoured 7.85in iPad has been in production since June, with a monthly volume at “around several hundreds of thousands,” but that is expected to ramp up to four million units per month, starting in September.
The sources said that a price tag of US$299 for the smaller iPad will likely make a big impact on sales of Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7, which are priced at $249 in Australia.
The iPad mini could be unveiled at a special event on 12 September, which is expected to see the launch of Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone. DigiTimes claims that the tablet could make its debut in October, though.
Many remain dubious about the 7.85in iPad, after the late Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs, famously dismissed the idea. If it does launch, however, it is expected that the device will be thinner, possibly as thin as an iPod touch, with smaller side bezels and a similar screen resolution to the iPad 2.
