Instagram for the iPhone has received its first update since its acquisition by Facebook for US$1 billion.

The new version, 2.5, replaces the ‘Popular’ tab with an ‘Explore’ tab that shows the highest rated photos.

Instagram users can now search by username or hashtag, letting them find images of a particular type or topic.

Version 2.5 also features a new setting ‘Open Graph’ which allows users to post their favourite Instagram images straight to their Facebook account within the app.

Other new features include improvements to commenting, user search autocompletes based on people you follow, visual improvements and speed optimisations.

Android users have not received the update, but as the app was downloaded by millions in the few days after its launch on the Google system they shouldn’t have to wait very long.
