Insider tips to ‘wait for iPad 3′

As the tech world (and everyone else) is whipped into a feeding frenzy over Apple’s next-generation iPad, a new report adds weight to previous speculation that the iPad 2 will be a ‘minor upgrade.’ Its future replacement, however – let’s call it the iPad 3 – will be a super slate that rocks the tablet world.

This latest gossip arrives courtesy the Cult of Mac blog, which reportedly got the inside dirt on the upcoming iPads from an anonymous Apple staffer. The source didn’t divulge details on the iPad 2 or 3, but did provide this insight:

“For the iPad 2 don’t get your hopes up too high. That’s all I’m going to say. They’ve had a number of problems along the way, and the third-generation iPad is the one to make a song and a dance about.”

The remarks about “problems along the way” may explain why Apple has waited until March to announce the iPad 2. The company usually adheres to an annual refresh cycle for its products-a new iPhone in the summer, for instance, and new iPods in the autumn – a schedule that suggests the iPad 2 launch is a month or so overdue. (The original iPad debuted in January 2010 and shipped in April.)

The Apple staffer’s lack of enthusiasm for the iPad 2 and praise for the iPad 3, which recent reports say will ship later this year, are in line with previous rumours from earlier in the year.

At the time, Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes was reporting that the iPad 2 would have a screen resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels–four times that of the current 1024-by-768 pixels.

Mainelli, however, believed the 2048-by-1536 pixels prediction was premature: “Our sources say Apple has requested that manufacturers begin work on displays with that resolution for the iPad 3,” said Mainelli, who didn’t predict when Apple’s third-gen tablet might ship.

Given the product release history of nearly all other Apple products, I think all these iPad 3 rumours are complete bunk. If ever there was a product that might have been released early in it’s lifecycle, it would have been an iPhone 4 replacement.
Despite numerous Apple products crying out for updates or refreshes, I can’t think of one that occurred outside it’s normal cycle. The iPad 1 itself is a good example. When the iPhone 4 and FaceTime came out, you just knew the next iPad would have those features.
Also note how incredibly long it takes Apple to fix glaring oversights such as the Bluetooth debacle on the iPhones. Copy and Paste. Now wireless hotspot on the iPhone. It takes far too long to catch up with the most basic of features, albeit that the Apple versions are usually superior in many ways.
I bet you a free digital mag subscription the iPad 3 won’t appear for another year. March 2012.

Last lot of rumours = fail. So I’m supposed to believe the new lot?

I agree with jeff. The Nasdaq’s bunny ear is lower on the left than the right. Provide a few features to bring in the punters that missed out on ipad1, say it will be the same price so they go for an upgrade and release it promptly just as china curbs inflation with a drop in the us/aud differential to gain a quasi price hike (lets face it, te hnology is getting cheaoer, who wants a macbook pro with apps). As i said, the left is lower than the right. Perhaps the easter bunny will keep the right ear more open to ioad3 and 4 rumours in late 2010?

In the meantime, i’ll enjoy a drink with the social networkers in dubai

I am a fair dinkum ipad 1 owner

The smart money is on those that buy any leftover ipad 1′s on the cheap post march 25.

Make it smaller and up the display. Add a mini display port to connect to a cinema display ans use as a quasi portable keyboard.

That’ll help get the nasdaq bunny ear higher on the right

    God save america!

IMHO, most of the specs for the iPad3 that comes out as rumors are more of a wish list than official specs or config. And some of them are not even practical. For example the 2048×1536 resolution display.

If Apple can achieve that display, awesome! But none of the apps in the app store would support that insane resolution and if they come up with higher resolution apps, doesn’t that mean the price to buy them would be higher as well?

The other prob with this resolution is, ppl with sight probs struggle with the current iPad as it is and this predicted resolution is gonna make things at least 4 times worse. But hey, if they do come out with a 2048×1536 screen, Dual core and the rest of the goodies as predicted, I’d be the first in line to get one :D These rumors are the reason I didn’t buy the iPad2. Hope apple doesn’t disappoint their customers……as usual.
