For Grey’s Anatomy fans in the US, watching an episode of ABC’s top-rated drama just got a whole lot more interactive with the release of Grey’s Anatomy Sync for iPad.

The free app (not currently available in Australia) provides interactive content in real time, based on what is happening on screen. Using audio watermarks that TV programs typically employ to track ratings, the app is able to work out where a viewer is in an episode and display related content on the iPad.

As well as using the app during a live show, users can also run Grey’s Anatomy Sync when they are watching a time-shifted copy of the program or when rewinding and fast forwarding the show.

This type of application has been used before, offering an enhanced TV experience for viewers as well as multiple platforms for advertisers to reach their target audience.
