Vodafone Australia has today announced it will begin offering the 8GB iPhone 3G for $0 when customers sign up for a $69 capped phone plan on a 24-month contract.

The $69 capped plan offers customers $340 worth of credit per month, which can be spread across voice calls, SMS and other services. The 250MB bundled mobile data per month suits casual iPhone users, although those looking for more intensive use may want to carefully look into excess usage charges.

Although Vodafone did not discuss the rumoured next-generation iPhone expected to be launched soon by Apple, the lower price may well suggest an effort to move the company’s remaining stock through the channel before it is made obsolete by its putative successor.
