Facebook’s new location-aware Places feature has begun to roll out to Australian users. The feature, already available in the US and other areas around the world, lets you ‘check in’ to tell your friends where you are, and in turn find out where they might be.

Facebook is being careful to explain that the feature is opt-in, meaning that you have to actively start using it for it to appear on your profile. Likewise, the default privacy setting for displaying your check-ins is ‘friends only’.

To access Places, you’ll either need to use the Facebook app on an iPhone, or access the touch.facebook.com mobile website from any web-enabled mobile phone.

The feature may not be available immediately, but Facebook promises it will be there “within a couple of days” for all Australian users.
