Following its recent US$1 billion acquisition of Instagram, Facebook has just released a separate photo-taking application for the iPhone.
The app, called Facebook Camera, is available for free on the iTunes App Store and borrows heavily from elements of Instagram, including photo filter options, batch uploading images to Facebook’s timeline as well as sharing capabilities with other users via social media.
Although it seems as if the Facebook Camera app has been launched in direct competition with Instagram, the new software does lack some features that Instagram supports, such as hashtags for categorising images into specific topic and mobile-only social circles.
According to website The Verge, the Facebook team had been working on the Camera app for months prior to its release and was not aware of the company’s plans to buy Instagram at the time.
