It seems that all those who looked at that picture of Canberra’s burnt out tablet and exclaimed, “That’s not an iPad Air – the bezels aren’t right!” (including Macworld Australia reader Brent Robertson) are smarter than the writers of the UK’s Mail Online (who’d have thought?).
Reports today from Mashable and Technology Tell quote a Vodafone Australia spokesperson who confirmed it wasn’t the iPad Air that went up in flames, but a previous model. “It was an earlier generation iPad with Retina display model — not one of the more recently launched devices. Apple is investigating the cause,” the spokesperson told Mashable.
This was confirmed by yet another unnamed spokesperson, who told Technology Tell, “Can confirm it was not an Air; all I know it was a Retina model, so a 3 or 4. Apple has taken the device for investigation, so we won’t know any more until they do.”
Clearly, any exploding iDevice is one too many, but it’s a little comforting to know that Apple’s latest and greatest tablet doesn’t have an inbuilt and hitherto unsuspected fatal flaw.
