As Apple’s rumoured iPhone 5 launch on September 12 draws near, it seems rival tech companies are in a flurry to announce their own product events before the big day, with seven brands scheduling dates in the coming weeks.
As reported by TheNextWeb, the next three weeks are looking tightly packed with expected announcements, releases and big-name product launches from companies including Samsung, Nokia, Microsoft, Google/Motorola, Amazon, HTC, and, of course, Apple.
Here’s a quick rundown of who’s doing what and when:
August 29: Samsung holds its ‘Unpacked’ event
Samsung has confirmed August 29 as the official date for their ‘Unpacked’ event in Berlin, where they will be making a big announcement. While no-one is completely sure what will be revealed, numerous reports from online publications, including this one from Wired, suggest the company will be introducing its Galaxy Note smartphone – a possibility, given that Samsung has typically reserved its ‘Unpacked’ event to debut major products.
September 5: Nokia and Microsoft host NYC press conference
The two companies will co-host a press event, widely believed to be the unveiling of the long-awaited Windows Phone 8, according to website Laptop Mag who received an official invitation to the event. First tipped to debut in October or November this year, the earlier timing means the new smartphone will hit the market first, pipping Apple’s iPhone 5 to the post.
September 5-6: Nokia World kicks off in Finland
Originally set to be held in late-September, Nokia’s annual developers’ conference event has been rescheduled for September 5-6. The Finnish phone manufacturer made the changes back in May, reports TheNextWeb, prior to news breaking of Apple’s looming event.
September 5: Google’s Motorola Mobility ‘On Display’
Proving to be a popular date for launch events, Google/Motorola Mobility has also earmarked September 5 for its ‘On Display’ event, touting it as “the day’s main event”. Taking place in New York, Motorola is teaming up with US carrier Verizon –what do they have planned? Websites such as topdog believe it could be something to do with new screen technology, given the event’s telling name.
September 6: Amazon press conference
According to TheNextWeb’s September roundup, Amazon will likely announce developments on its Kindle devices, or possibly even a new phone. But the jury is still out, with nothing confirmed to date.
September 12: Apple and the iPhone 5
Macworld Australia has published a number of reports on Apple’s purported September 12 launch, predicting the unveiling of the long-awaited iPhone 5 and iOS 6. Check out our rumour roundup for what we think Apple has in store.
Late September: Unconfirmed HTC event
Nothing has been set in stone, but HTC may be holding its own event to announce new Windows 8-compatible devices in late September, following Apple’s big unveiling.
One thing is for certain – September looks to be an action-packed month for the technology industry.
