Snow Leopard makes strides in accessibility

Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) introduced a host of features that made using a Mac easier for people with physical disabilities. Among its key improvements was VoiceOver, a screen reader that narrated whatever was on the Mac’s display. Leopard improved on those features, adding a more human-sounding computer voice (Alex) and offering more ways to interact with the Mac (including support for USB Braille displays and number-pad input). Snow Leopard continues those efforts to make OS X more accessible.

Apple introduces new Logic Studio

Apple on Thursday released the second iteration of its Logic Studio suite of multimedia tools with the musician in mind. The new version includes Logic Pro 9, MainStage 2, Soundtrack Pro 3, Compressor 3.5, and WaveBurner 1.6. Additionally, Logic Studio includes all six of Apple’s Jam Pack loop sets along with its bundled sound effects, surround sound music beds, EXS24 samples, and impulse response files.

Podcaster returns under jailbreak

Podcaster, the application rejected from the App Store that allows you to stream and download podcasts directly to an iPhone or iPod touch, is now being distributed via Cydia, the open-source installer used to place applications on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches.

Updated HandBrake encodes more than DVDs

HandBrake, the tool many people use to convert their DVDs to forms playable on other devices—including iPods, iPhones, Apple TVs, and on Macs via the QuickTime Player application—is being updated to convert not just DVDs and Video_TS folders, but many other kinds of video as well.

First Look: Second-generation iPod touch

With the second go-round of the iPod touch—introduced this week as part of Apple’s annual spring iPod line overhaul—Apple takes another step in the right direction by adding those two desirable physical features: external volume controls and an internal speaker. Along the way, the company also slimmed down the case and, rounding the iPod touch’s edges in style not unlike the iPhone 3G’s.

iPod touch

When writing about the multimedia capabilities of the iPhone, I called it “the iPod that’s really a phone”. You could say that the iPod touch is the iPhone that’s really an iPod. After all, the touchscreen iPod shares much of the interface and design of the iPhone.
