Australian police have again cautioned motorists relying on online navigation technology, this time voicing concerns over Google Maps software, following a similar warning involving Apple’s Maps application earlier in the week.

The Google Maps issue was reported by police in Colac, a town west of Melbourne, after drivers travelling along the Great Ocean Road were misdirected by the app onto Wild Dog Road, a one-way road unsuitable for heavy traffic. According to a report by the ABC, the error in Google’s navigation software has led to a number of near fatal incidents.

The caution follows a separate warning issued by Victoria police earlier this week advising the public that Apple’s native Maps application was displaying incorrect location data for the town of Mildura, which resulted in motorists being left stranded in Murray-Sunset National Park without food or water. A number of rescue operations were carried out by local police to retrieve the drivers from the area, prompting authorities to contact Apple to rectify the situation.

Apple responded to the call by Victoria police, making revisions to its Maps software overnight. The following day, however, Mildura police inspector Simon Clemence told The Australian that the app was still displaying the error when accessed from certain regions.

“If you’re coming from Melbourne it still puts Mildura in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park,” Clemence told the newspaper.

“They have half-fixed the problem.”

  1. Peter says:

I live half way between Yass NSW and Canberra ACT yet the map shows the town of Yass being very close to my location.

  2. Rob says:

I used Apple Maps as my GPS for a road trip from Houston, TX to St. Louis, MO to Rockford, IL to Milwaukee, WI to Chicago, IL to Lynchburg, TN to New Orleans, LA back to Houston, TX and the turn-by-turn navigation performed flawlessly. That’s all the proof I need.
