The number of Australian domain name registrations has continued to surge even as businesses and consumers tighten spending to ride out the economic downturn, .au registry operator AusRegistry has reported in its latest update.

More than 1.4 million .au domains are currently active, which AusRegistry CEO Adrian Kinderis said made our domain space one of the world’s most populated. Registrations had grown an average 26% per annum over the last five years, including a 22% increase over the last 12 months, according to AusRegistry figures.

“The local market remains very patriotic towards .au and having a .au domain has become part of the fabric of doing business in Australia,” Kinderis said in a statement. “This loyalty delivers the .au industry extremely high levels of trust in the .au brand, which is demonstrated in consistently high renewal rates for .au domain names.”
