The geek name has been tarnished of late, thanks to the terrible excuse for a TV show that is Beauty and the Geek. But internet service provider iiNet is set to change that, launching the ‘iiNet Top Geek‘ search – a competition that it says it’s launching to “celebrate geek chic”.
iiNet doesn’t care what flavour of geek you are either – “whether you’re a skater girl, manga-loving otaku, computer nerd, music fan, or history buff – we want to hear from you,” says iiNet chief sales and marketing officer Sam McDonagh. We thought there might be a few Apple fanboys among our readership (and indeed among our own staff) that qualify somewhere in that description.
The prize for the Top Geek is also suitably geeky: the winner receives an all expenses paid trip to the United States to attend their preferred event from Comic Con, CES, SXSW or PAX. (If you’re geek enough for the competition, we shouldn’t need to spell those events out for you.)
All you need to do is produce a video explaining why you’re the Top Geek. A judging panel will select finalists, and set challenges to put them through their geeky paces. The public will also get to vote, and a winner will be announced in February.
