Apple’s new, smaller dock connector will be called ‘Lightning’, its earphones dubbed ‘Earpods’ and two dock adapters will be announced at Apple’s September 12 media event (September 13, 2am AEST), according to one report.

Citing sources, 9to5Mac claims “Apple’s new, smaller 9-pin dock connector is dubbed ‘Lightning’ internally”, and will be marketed with the same name.

While the name would suit the company’s current cable naming scheme – eg. Thunderbolt – internal code-names have a history of altering when the product is released by Apple.

The new dock connector will arrive with two different adapters for its current 30-pin iOS devices according to the report.

“The first version apparently clips onto the bottom of the new iOS devices. The second is a version with a little cable attached for accessories like tight-fitting cases.”

The report also claims Apple will release newly designed earphones at tomorrow morning’s media event, branded as ‘Earpods’, which will remain at the same retail price as the current model of Apple earphones.

These could possibly be the headphones, pictured on the web last week.
