Apple has knocked off Google to be named the world’s most powerful brand, according to a survey by research company Millward Brown.

After coming in at third place in last year’s Brandz survey, which calculates the top 100 global brands every year, Apple moved to the top spot due to an estimated 84 percent increase in value to $142 billion.

Search giant Google spent the last four years in the number one position.

“It is really the iPad that has driven [Apple's growing brand value], although the iPhone has continued to do magnificently too, and the development of apps,” global director of the Brandz report, Peter Walshe, told the Guardian.

Walshe also downplayed the impact of CEO Steve Jobs’ extended medical leave, focusing instead on Apple’s current – and future – products, their desirability and discussion on blogs, forums and tweets.
