Apple has sent an email to Mac developers encouraging them to sign up for the company’ Developer ID program so that their apps can be signed ahead of the launch of OS X Mountain Lion later this year.
The Gatekeeper feature which Apple has incorporated in its yet-be-released OS X Mountian Lion enables users to set limits on app installations, via a Developer ID program. The new implementation provides extra security that certifies which developer is behind certain applications.
If, for any reason, a developer is found guilty of misconduct Apple will have the authority to revoke their ID signature, preventing the associated apps from running in the Mac App store and causing further harm to users.
OS X Mountain Lion is set to launch in late winter in Australia, with more information expected at Apple’s June WWDC event.
