Apple has opened nominations for the 2012 Apple Design Awards, which recognises iOS and OS X apps and developers that reflect the very best in design, innovation and technology adoption.

Every year Apple recognises developers as part of the awards to be held during WWDC week, which Apple announced this morning. Winners will receive an Apple Design Award trophy, along with other prizes to be announced by the company.

Nomination process started today, and all submissions must be available on the App or Mac Store by 1 May.

Nominated apps must have three key characteristics, these include:

Well-Designed: Apps that are inviting, engaging, easy to use, intuitive and compelling.

State of the Art: Apps that take advantage of the latest hardware, OS releases and technologies to offer rich functionality, high performance and extensive system integration.

Innovative: Apps that are revolutionary, inspiring and do things in new and creative ways.

To attend the special event  developers will require a WWDC ticket for the Apple Design Awards awards, however Apple confirmed tickets were sold out, soon after announcing WWDC 2012.
