Further indication that the iPhone 5 is set to launch in the coming weeks, Apple is now offering customers in the US a trade-in deal for iPhone 4S models, worth up to US$345.

Outlined in a report by website TNW, Apple’s online Reuse and Recycle program via its US website is allowing customers who own old iPhone models – including the current iPhone 4S – to redeem their handset for an Apple gift card, worth as much as US$345 for the the higher-priced 32GB iPhone 4S. All gift card amounts are dependent on the model and condition of the owner’s device.

“Using Apple’s Reuse and Recycle program, you are able to select the model, colour and condition of your iPhone 4S (and other Apple devices) from the online wizard, which will then output a price that it believes your device is worth,” TNW writes.

If the customer agrees with the price estimated for their iPhone in its current condition, they can then send the handset along with its power cord to Apple, to receive a gift card.

The trade-in has numerous websites – including Mactrast – reporting on the news as a clear indicator that Apple’s long-awaited iPhone 5 will be launched next month, with September 12 tipped to be the official announcement date.
