Apple has confirmed that there is a problem with its second and third generation Apple TV that prevents users from being able to install software updates, including Apple TV software 5.1.1, and play some content when connected to the web via Ethernet.
In a post on its support website this week, Apple explained: “In rare instances, Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation) models using Apple TV Software 5.1 may be unable to play certain content using an Ethernet connection.
This content may include Hulu Plus, MLB, NHL, YouTube, Photo Stream and WSJ Live, says Apple.
“This issue may also prevent you from installing Apple TV software updates using an Ethernet connection,” Apple adds.
Apple advises that, to resolve the problem, which it claims has affected “a small number of routers and switches,” users should update to Apple TV Software 5.1.1.
Of course, you might not be able to install the update using an Ethernet connection, in which case, Apple says users should: “disconnect your Ethernet connection temporarily and use a WiFi connection to update.”
However, some users who have been able to update to Apple TV 5.1.1 have found that networking issues still remain, and some suggest that reverting back to 5.0.2 is the only solution.
