You might have found yourself the lucky recipient of an app promo code before, only to realise it wouldn’t work on the Australian App Store. That’s because Apple has previously only allowed redemption of promo codes via the US App Store. While you’ve been able to get around the problem by starting a US iTunes account, juggling multiple accounts on iOS devices is a clunky solution.
Thankfully, the clunky workaround is no longer necessary, as you’ll be able to redeem promo codes in any regional App Stores – including the Australian one! According to MacKinando, Apple has posted the following note to developers:
Your promo code distribution is no longer limited to U.S. customers. Promo codes in iTunes Connect can now be redeemed by all App Store customers worldwide. Your Team Agent can request 50 codes per version of your app in iTunes Connect and your customers can redeem these codes in any App Store.
If you’ve already employed the workaround, you won’t be able to migrate your apps across to the local store, but if you find yourself the recipient of a promo code from a developer, you’ll be able to redeem it wherever you choose.
The change is also good news for local developers, who will now be able to get more copies of their apps out to reviewers and as competition prizes. App developers can generate up to 50 promo codes per app update, and codes are redeemable for four weeks after being generated.
It’s worth noting that this applies specifically to promo codes from developers. Gift codes, which can be purchased through iTunes, are redeemable only in the store in which they were created.
